What are some pros & cons of working from home?

There are both advantages and disadvantages of setting up your office at home. If you have worked in a traditional office environment, the idea of working from home may sound great. It allows you to be with your family all the time and possibly save on office rent. However, there are also some drawbacks associated with working from home that can affect both your career development and performance.

When you work from home, you are your own boss. You get the opportunity to spend more time with your family, monitor the progress of your children and provide them all the guidance they require. Another major benefit is that you get to save travel time. People who work in large commercial cities know how painful it is to travel to and from work during rush hours. You also don’t need to spend money on formal clothing, as you can wear whatever you are comfortable with while working from home. Last but not least, work from home offers greater flexibility. You can set your own work timings and can set aside time for other things that need to be done, for instance, picking up your children from school.

However, working from home may not be a perfect scenario for everybody. Many people who work from home find it hard to avoid slipping into slackness. As there is no pressure to go to work at a specific time, it is difficult to start work on time. In this situation, productivity may go down tremendously. It is also very difficult to avoid distractions when somebody is at home. Many people who work from home find it impossible to separate work and personal life. Lastly, most people who work from home fail to keep the competitive spirit alive due to the lack of personal interaction.

In order to make the most of your work from home experience, you need a great amount of discipline and avoid complete isolation from your manager and/or work colleagues.
