9 Questions Most People Fail to Ask Before They Choose an Interior Designer by Danielle Wise
We know talent is needed to create a well-designed space but did you know a client appearing as “difficult,” “poor pay” or “indecisive” can negatively impact a project? The old adage “time is money” is very true when it comes to a design project and issues with a client may make a designer turn down a project if it appears that time may be wasted while resolving unrelated design is¬sues. So, would you make a good client?
Do You Know How Much You Want to Spend?
Have a budget! Everyone knows how much he or she can afford to spend. Designers work within budgets and can assist in establishing one but as the client you know your pocketbook!
Are You Decisive?
A designer works on a schedule and needs decisions so orders can be placed for long lead items such as Furniture, fabric or wallpaper, and/or scheduling consultants to perform work. Nothing upsets a designer more than to have a client agree to a product, have it delivered only to hear the client doesn’t like it! If it’s you and a significant other, make sure the two of you agree beforehand on how you are going to reach a final decision and who will be the lead contact for communicating and working with the designer.
Do You Know Your Style?
Purchase design magazines and select examples of what you like as representative of your style and taste allowing the designer to get a feel of what you are looking for.
Do You Know What You Want?
Be clear on what work you want completed an d what services you will need. Are you looking for a designer to design an entire house or one room, make all the purchases, hire the painters and other consultants and over¬see all the deliveries and installation? Or are you only seeking consulting for a small problem area?
